Honouring Ruby's Legacy
Ruby Lee Powder was a light in the darkness for others. Even though she fought her own internal battles for many years, she never shied away from helping others in their deepest of internal struggles.
Ruby was a mental health advocate who bravely shared her own mental health struggles in an effort to shine a light on the internal pain people face; often alone. She had spoken on behalf of some incredible organizations like Youth Matter Canada, Sask Youth Advocacy Council, Sunwest DLC and Canadian Mental Health Association - Saskatoon Branch. She was fondly cared for by our own Darren Anderson and spoke bravely about her challenges with Darren as a Love My Mind guest.
Ruby worked with, navigated and fought her mental health challenges bravely and she worked hard at it for many years. At some point though, the illness became too strong and she laid down. She lost her battle and died by Suicide on May 24, 2024. She didn’t see that others wanted to be her light when she lost hers.
Ruby’s family feels no shame for Ruby’s journey and with honour, they are choosing to carry on the work and message Ruby was trying to do for others. It is with honour and love for Ruby that her family is carrying on her message that she said often, “You have to get your feelings out before they take you out”. Therapy and talk were the most important tool in Ruby’s toolbox for healing and battling the intrusive, painful thoughts and beliefs she had of herself.
The Powder Family has donated money to Love My Mind which will be used to assist people who do not have the funds to get therapy. This much needed therapy will help them navigate their path. We know Ruby would be incredibly proud of her family and Love My Mind. She wanted to see everyone be successful and feel better. We are carrying her Light the best we can.
