We Connect with Tanner & Katie | Martensville Youth Connection
Let's continue our discussion about youth in our community! Tanner & Katie have developed a program that has changed the wellness game!
Martensville Youth Connection (MYC). MYC is a drop in youth mental wellness program in Martensville, SK serving youth ages 10-16 in the greater Saskatoon area.
MYC has evolved over the past year from a 1 day per week group in a coffee shop to a 5 day per week safe place youth can drop in and talk about mental health with an educated mental health professional. Or they can hang out, have fun, play games, and stay for our scheduled mental health/life skills lesson. Some of our scheduled lessons are on topics: Anxiety, Depression, Substance Use and Addiction, Self-Harm,
Consent, Relationships, Conflict Resolution, Conflict at Home, Learn to Say No, etc. Our approach uses Evidence-Informed information such as CBT, DBT, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), among others.

MYC is more than a drop in center that teaches information, we connect the youth with other groups, organizations, employers, volunteer opportunities, or other supports in the community. Two of our most successful connections have been with Paws Republic and The Golden Sunset Villa. Every Tuesday our team takes the youth from MYC to Paws Republic where the youth learn how to care for animals and also benefit from the unconditional love animals provide as a therapeutic release. Once per month our team
gets together and the youth plan a meal that they themselves will prepare for the seniors at the Golden Sunset Villa. Once plans are made our leaders acquire the supplies and schedule a day to host the meal.

The seniors have been so appreciative of this connection. Some other connections and projects we have undertaken are:
Community Clean up - youth and parents volunteer to collect garbage from around town Skate Park Take over - Antioch Skate gave a free hour skate lesson at the skate park providing equipment and safety gear.
Talking Circle - Honouring and learning about Indigenous culture and taking time to share with peers. Counselling Connections - MYC has brought in two counselling businesses to present to the youth about their areas of expertise in counselling. This plants seeds with youth knowing there are supports out there when situations in life arise.
Join us Thursday and learn how to be a part of this program!
